The Importance of Daily Practice

The age old saying,"practice makes perfect" is as true as ever when it comes to fashion design. Through my experience I have found that daily practice increases designing skills. Unfortunately I have been slacking and have realized that the skills that I once worked so hard to acquire have almost left me. Today while sketching I realized that my abilities to complete my fashion sketches are now slower and harder to complete.
Sometimes it may seem as though life gets extremely busy and there is simply not enough hours in the day to complete one silly sketch. Do not listen to this tiny voice! I repeat: do not listen to this tiny voice! Set aside time everyday. This should be the same time every single day. After two weeks of sketching at the same time everyday it will become a habit.
The next thing to do would be to focus on the fact that you must complete a sketch at your allotted time everyday. I have found that it is easiest to view the world with this in mind. Find inspiration in daily activities and your sketches will be easier to complete! The key to sketching everyday is making it something that becomes second nature. Carry around a journal or a sketch book. This will allow you to jot down ideas and inspiration. I have found that carrying a camera is also essential. This allows you to visualize and lets you to focus on exactly what inspired you.
I hope that these tips help. Don't procrastinate. It only harms you in the end! Off to my drawing class! Good luck!

How to Gain Inspiration: Design Journal

Often times I find it difficult to sketch. I have realized that many people get "designers block"! It happens to many people in creative fields. The point is you must take yourself out of this rut. There are many ways to gain creative energy to complete your design project.
A good first step I learned to do is create a design notebook. Keep your raw inspiration in this book. Have fun with it and decorate it as you please. There should be no limitations or thought put into it's creation. This book should be simply to give inspiration for creativity.
This serve as a reference point to your mood board. Also it becomes a great go-to tool when you have a brain cramp! The smallest of depictions within your design book could spark a flare of genius. This is why it is imperative to keep this type of journal. After some time volumes begin to compile and allows the designer to hone their skills. The journal allows you to gain a greater sense of who you are as a designer. Your particular design aesthetic will begin to emerge and transform as well as you will begin to grow as a designer! Good luck!

Lanvin Goes Mainstream with H&M!

For the true fashionistas on a budget French fashion house Lanvin will be collaborating with H&M stores worldwide.  In snippets posted both on Facebook and YouTube, Lanvin’s creative director Alber Elbaz says, “With design we are actually dealing with real and surreal, with surreal and real, with fantasy and a dream, dream and fantasy. The mix of the two, I think, is the essence of design. It’s this emotional and rational, both at the same time.”
The collection will be on sale starting on November 20. Along with the shoe collection there is also a small line of young and womenswear and menswear. Select H&M stores will be carrying these products. I think that the shoe collection is very chic. There is a very distinct Parisian look and feel of the entire collection. The consumer should keep in mind the history of this company. Lanvin has been around for decades and has been the epitome of French high fashion. They are a very directional label. Their vision is constantly moving, changing, and evolving. Of course, these shoes are not for everyone however they represent a change in fashion. More and more we see major fashion houses coming out with more affordable lines for their younger clients. This affordability provides accessibility, high fashion inspired pieces and somewhat of a collectable. With prices starting at $9.95 you can’t go wrong! Check out: http://www.hm.com/gb/press/pressreleases/__prfashion.nhtml?pressreleaseid=1081 for more information on the launch!

Lions, Tigers and More Animal Print Oh My!

Fall 2010 fashion has seen a great deal of fashion trends! One of my favorite: Animal Print. Once only seen in the collections of Roberto Cavalli, this season must have is turning up on catwalk around the world. The print has seen an update however. Animal prints are now paired with other prints to create layers of texture and interest. The prints are seen in sheer materials as well as stiff cottons. Runways are also seeing animal prints in various colors, not the typical brown and black motif! Below are some easy guidelines to follow when wearing animal prints.

Easy ways to wear Animal Prints:

To work: pair animal prints with neutrals. Be sure to keep you look polished and use work appropriate proportions.

Day wear: Keep your animal print fun and flirty by pairing it with Denim and funky shoes! Keep you accessories interesting and makeup minimal.

Evening/Weekend: Make you animal print pop with shots of color! Hot Pink, Yellow, Red! You decide! Metallics also work well for evening wear. Pair your print with sky high metallic heels as well as chunky accessories!

Even though animal prints are a must have be sure to wear it your way! The best fashion advice is to own your look and be confident!
